How do you tell if a device is using battery?
Fox News asked the experts to help out with the battery maintainers’ questions.
“Are the batteries not charging?”
“Are they not working?”
“How long does the battery last?” and “Is it safe to plug the battery in?”
“Do you know if the battery has any problems?”
“Can you do any research on the batteries?”
“Is there a way to test for and fix the battery?”
A lot of this is a little more subjective, so we asked the maintainers to give their thoughts on the battery tests.
“I would say to go back to the original question of, how long does this battery last?
That is the question I am going to focus on,” said Jon Schafer, a retired U.S. Army Reserve pilot who spent the last 20 years as a battery technician.
“Is the battery safe to use?”
“It’s probably safe to go out and get a battery if you don’t have any problems,” said John H. Fosch, who is now a senior software engineer at Cisco Systems.
“I would not suggest that you would go out, get a new battery and try to charge it overnight.
It may take a few weeks.”
But he added, “You have to remember that it is a very small part of the system, so you are not going to get the full picture of the battery.
You will get a very rough idea of how much power is in there, but you don`t get the whole picture.”
“It is also a very easy thing to test,” said Michael D. Wittenberg, who retired from the U.N. Security Council last year.
“You can run a battery through the same battery charger, and you can look at it for a long time, and then it can be determined whether it is working.”
In addition to the battery, the hardware on the laptop and desktop also needs to be checked.
“If it`s the same laptop, and it`ll show that there`s no problems, then that laptop is working,” said David A. Rauch, a senior engineer with Intel who retired in August.
“But if you are using a laptop with a different screen, then the system may have problems.”
If you have any of these issues, and the computer is not responding to you or is not doing the things you want, then you should probably get a replacement laptop, said Wittenber.
“And you may need to replace your batteries too.”
And if that laptop isn`t working, you need to go to the manufacturer.
“The manufacturer will have a program where they will have these systems tested, and they will put in a diagnostic kit,” said RauCh.
“So if you have a computer that doesn`t have any diagnostics, you have to buy a new laptop.
You`ll have to replace all the electronics.””
If you do a full battery check on the desktop, then it should look OK, and if it doesn`s not, then go back and buy another one,” said Wieden.
So it sounds like you should be looking for a replacement computer if you think your laptop is using a battery.
