Oilers GM Ryan McDonough, Flames GM Brian Burke on ‘bizarre’ deadline situation: ‘It’s a crazy situation’
Calgary Flames GM Ryan MacNeil is concerned about the “bizarre” deadline situation in Edmonton, where they are forced to make changes to players and staff before the trade deadline.
“We are going to continue to make adjustments, and that’s OK, but it’s a little bit crazy,” MacNeil said.
With the deadline approaching, MacNeil has said he will continue to look at every situation before the deadline.
MacNeil, however, did not give an exact number of changes he is considering for Edmonton.
When asked if the Oilers are making any significant changes, MacNeill said: “I would say there’s a few things we’re looking at, and we’ll see what the market looks like in the next couple of days.
The Flames have also been under a bit of pressure for a while now, and they’ve had some bad seasons, and the market has been kind of tough.
If you look at the market and the teams in the market, it seems like everybody is kind of competing to get out of it, so it’s not really a huge shock.”
MacNeil also said he was not surprised by the price tag for the Flames’ defenseman Matt Bartkowski, which the team paid for him in the summer.
However, he is concerned that the Oilers could be getting a better deal for the 27-year-old.
Bartkowski’s $6.5 million cap hit is not too bad for a defenseman, and if he had been signed last summer, he would have been worth $5.5M per year, according to CapGeek.
MacNeil, who was hired last summer to replace the fired Jim Benning, has said the Oilers will try to improve their roster to make them a playoff contender this season.
He said the team will look at all the options available to them to make that happen.
The Oilers are currently 15-20-6-5, and will host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday night.
